Our Story
Gilu is my love letter to cats and the incredible community of people who dedicate their lives to rescuing them. It all began when my daughter and I started volunteering at a local cat shelter.
Before long, we were fostering cats and immersing ourselves in Philadelphia’s cat rescue world. It was a world full of compassion and determination, but also one where challenges seemed insurmountable.
I saw firsthand what rescuers face daily—trapping and neutering cats, finding homes for the friendliest strays, and tirelessly caring for colonies. Despite the unwavering dedication of so many, the problem of stray and feral cats in our region felt like a never-ending battle. I witnessed rescuers pouring their time, energy, and resources into their work, often at great personal sacrifice. And yet, it wasn’t enough.
I realized that while TNR is vital, it’s just one piece of the puzzle. We needed more—better access to affordable spay/neuter services, stronger legislation, and, most importantly, a shift in how people care for and understand cats.
The moment that changed everything for me was the loss of Güero, a beautiful outdoor cat who had become part of my family. He was hit by a car, and in my heartbreak, I made a promise: I would dedicate my life to creating lasting change—not just for cats like Güero but for the countless rescuers whose work often goes unnoticed.
That promise became Gilu, named for my beloved Güero: Güero I Love U.
Gilu isn’t just a brand; it’s a mission. It’s a tribute to the cats who touch our lives and the unsung heroes who fight for them every day. Through Gilu, I want to celebrate the beauty of cats and amplify the voices of the rescue community.
